Defence
Defence applications are the traditional users of millimetre wave components and systems. Millimeter wave communication is inherently difficult to detect, because it uses frequencies much higher than commonly available equipment, and because the links are line-of-sight only. So the 60GHz band particularly is used for secure, high bandwidth, communications in military applications such as relay of high definition battlefield images and video.
Just as 94GHz radiation allows detection through fabrics, it's penetration of cloud, fog, and dust can be used in day, night, all weather visibility applications to provide landing assistance for helicopter and aircraft pilots, especially in "brownout" desert landing scenarios where traditional night vision goggles perform poorly.
W-band imaging is also now being developed for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to provide detailed video of battlefield terrain, vehicle and personnel movements, at night, and in all weather including sand storms.
The use of UAVs is growing very rapidly right across the globe, and the low weight and small size modules enabled by MMIC Solutions’ technology are an ideal solution for imaging and communications payloads demanded by even the smallest UAV platforms.
