High Bandwidth Communications
Demand for mobile data services is booming, driven by the growing popularity of media-rich applications such as Facebook and YouTube, as well as by new devices such as Apple's iPhone. With the roll-out of high capacity systems such as HSDPA, LTE, and WiMAX, mobile operators are already facing a serious engineering challenge as high data demands of users are aggregated together and carried from the base station sites into the core fibre optic network. Some base stations now need a backhaul connection carrying many hundreds of Megabits per second.
Easy and low cost installation makes wireless backhaul very attractive for network operators. Many countries have allocated spectrum between 57 and 66GHz for high capacity Point-to-Point links in corporate networks. Very low cost licensing of E-Band frequencies (71-76GHz and 81-86GHz) is now rolling out across Europe and elsewhere allowing mobile network operators to quickly and easily install full Gigabit per second links in dense urban environments.

Despite the demand, today’s high cost of traditional millimeter wave components has inhibited the use of these high capacity links. MMIC Solutions’ technology now enables high bandwidth millimeter wave transceivers to achieve the same cost as conventional, lower capacity microwave links, and offers a roadmap to continued cost reductions in the future as millimetre wave semiconductors become more highly integrated and difficult to package.
