Applications
High Resolution Radar
Radar techniques have been applied across a wide range of frequencies, including the millimeter wave bands, often in military and avionics applications which are characterized by low volumes and high cost. The shorter wavelengths provide enhanced resolution, and allow smaller antennas and equipment.
Commercial applications for millimeter wave radars include perimeter security and a number of vehicular systems for driver assistance and automated control. Electronic systems are increasingly used in vehicles, from the safety critical (e.g. air bags and brake control) to the convenient (e.g. global positioning by satellite and rear seat entertainment). ‘Short-range’ anti-collision radars at 79GHz and ‘long range’ Adaptive Cruise Control radars at 76-77GHz are available today, but only as options for luxury models. Like all automotive electronics they will become standard on mid and economy vehicles as costs reduce.
The ability to design and manufacture millimeter wave modules in substantial volume, with high quality, and very low cost, is the key competence for success in these markets, and MMIC Solutions patented manufacturing technology addresses these needs directly.
