MMIC Solutions licenses Millimetre Wave Technology from QinetiQ UK Ltd.

Malvern UK. 30th August 2005. MMIC Solutions Ltd. a recently established start-up has licensed technology from QinetiQ UK Ltd. That will allow manufacture of millimeter wave modules at substantially reduced cost.

To date, building equipment operating at these frequencies has involved manual assembly and tuning, often considerable rework and low yields. Precluded from the use of automated manufacture, manufacturing costs are high, and applications have been restricted to avionic and military systems. However, operating frequencies between 30 and 300GHz enable several commercial applications including security imaging and high capacity communications.

Naturally occurring millimeter-waves enable detection of metallic and non-metallic materials concealed under clothing; including weapons, explosives, and contraband goods. With low cost, automatically manufactured receivers, imaging using millimeter waves will be widely deployed in the next few years to increase public security in the fight against terrorism.

Very high frequency also enables high capacity wireless communication with data rates of 1Gbit/sec and more. The propagation characteristics of frequencies as high as 60GHz and 70GHz have also allowed authorities to adopt simple and very low cost spectrum licensing, and some bands are entirely unlicensed. As the increasing use of video and data drives demand for bandwidth ever higher, network operators – both public and private – are looking to millimeter wave radio to significantly increase capacity.

MMIC Solutions has licensed QinetiQ’s module manufacturing technology to exploit these and several other opportunities, by designing modules to meet customer needs, and manufacturing and supplying products worldwide. Announcing the license, co-founder and chairman Douglas Dundonald said: ”Realising the many commercial benefits of using millimeter wave bands has been prohibited by high costs to date, but our license of this technology and deployment across several markets and many customers will allow MMIC Solutions to exploit the huge and emerging potential.”
